Numbering that adjusts to the respondent's survey experience

Some pre-testing feedback on a survey that I am developing suggests that some find the discontinuous numbering that arises from respondents branching past questions to be disconcerting. It would be nice if the numbering would follow the respondent experience as opposed to the survey structure.
